PEACE: BE STILL

Commentary ANDREA OATES

"Stand ye still and see the salvation of the Lord…" Stillness is sometimes a bad word in our bold and brash society. We are supposed to be aggressive, persistent, diligent, relentless, and always on-thego. A lot of times, being still and waiting on God are things that seem hard to do. We are used to believing what we see. And, in our perception, if we are not moving, nothing is being accomplished. However, that can be far from the truth.

The Bible endorses concepts such as persistence and diligence. The Word, many times, warns us against being idle and lazy. However, there is a time for everything. One indicator that it's time to be still is when you have obeyed the will of God. The scripture states, "having done all, to stand…"

There are definitely acts that we have to do. After all, faith alone without corresponding actions is dead. But there comes a time when the Spirit of God will prompt you to simply be still and watch. A part of stillness is standing on the Word of God and not moving from your hope. Remaining unmoved by doubts, fears, intimidation, and whatever may come your way. At those times, God is at work on your behalf. Even though you can't "see" things changing with your eyes, manifestation is on the way. After all, the battle is the Lord's.

Many times the stillness that we need, though, is one of the soul. Whether we are in a state of transition or being physically still, no exterior circumstance should move us out of the peace of God. The song declares, "This peace that I have, the world didn't give it to me." Jesus, before ascending into heaven after He was raised from the dead, blessed His followers.

He executed His own last will and testament. In John 14:27, He bequeathed us His peace! "My peace I give unto you…" What an inheritance! No matter what happens and no matter what we go through in this world, we can always walk in the peace of God! Peace, though it is invisible, is a priceless commodity. Without it, people from all walks of life suffer serious mental and physical impairments. In fact, many commit suicide simply desiring peace.

But we do not have to live without peace (peace with God, peace with ourselves, and peace in life).

Keep your heart with all diligence. Those who have their minds stayed on Jesus-who He is and who we are in Him-He will keep in perfect peace. Seek peace and pursue it, as much as possible, with all men. Don't let anger or bitterness into your heart. It is a sacred place. You alone have the power to walk in peace. Jesus gave it to you. The only way that others or life events can take it from you, is if you give it away. If you have been lacking peace and stillness in your soul, simply ask God for it. Receive it by faith. Walk in it. Sow it. And don't let it go for anything the world has to offer you.
