I am Bobby Harris, and I would like to serve District 4 on City Council. I would like to represent the people of District 4 and stand up for them, if need be. How any one could run for public office in Sumter County but have no opinion on the Bridges case is beyond my comprehension. One would have to be like the proverbial ostrich with his head in the sand. I have read both the police report and the autopsy report concerning Mr. Eddie Bridges, and DO have an opinion.
Mr. Bridges was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing, and was not someplace he didn't need to be. An Americus police officer deliberately did not follow policies and procedures, and approached Mr. Bridges, whereby a confrontation ensued. Mr. Bridges was stuck in the head several times, to the point that his eyeball protruded from his skull. According to the police report, Mr. Bridges had a weapon. In fact, Mr. Bridges DID have a "weapon" - a can of fruit juice! I personally can understand how a certified and trained police officer could feel his life was endangered in this situation. Yeah, right.
Mr. Bridges was not transported to the hospital by helicopter or ambulance, but handcuffed and put in the back of a patrol car. The local hospital, at the time, found his injuries too server to be treated locally. He was therefore transported elsewhere, still on a patrol car.
Mr. Bridges never truly recovered from his injuries received that day. I am no doctor, but even an average village idiot should know that continuing to hit someone with epilepsy repeatedly in the head could only aggravate his physical health condition.
Perhaps the civil case now in the courts against the City of Americus and named individuals will cast some light upon this dark area of our great city. Had procedures been followed and policies upheld, I believe this situation could have been avoided entirely. There is an old saying what goes something like this: "It is time to put the monkey where the monkey goes." I am Bobby Harris, and, if elected to District 4 Americus City Council, you will have a friend at City Hall. This I can promise whole- heartedly.
