Councilman Eugene Edge, SR. Gives 100 Percent

Staff Reports

Councilman Eugene Edge, Sr. of Plains is wholly committed to his mission: to see the City of Plains thrive. As a member of the city council for over fifteen years, he has played an integral part in its operation. He served on the Public Safety and Streets & Subdivisions committees for the majority of his tenure. One of his first achievements was to pave West Main Street in a predominantly African-American section of Plains. He was also instrumental in the City receiving a $2000 grant to update the water system.

His future plans include paving Graham, Waters, and Washington streets. In fact, the plans are in the works. Mr. Edge describes his experience on the city council as rewarding. He attends meetings regularly and fulfils the obligations of his position with fervor. He states, "I give 100% into whatever I do. And I expect others to do the same."

Serving comes easy for Councilman Edge. In 1980, he was an active member SCOPE (Sumter County Organization for Public Education). After boycotting the county school system, the group forced the Sumter County Board of Education to build new schools to eliminate overcrowding.

Later, in 1982, he was selected to serve on the Board of Deacons of Lebanon Baptist Church in Plains. He is currently the Vice Chairman of the Board and the Sunday School teacher for the adult class.

Lastly, he served on the Board of Directors for the Plains Community Club for several years. The mission of the group was to provide recreation for the youth.

Councilman Eugene Edge, Sr. describes himself as a down-to-earth country boy. But the description is insufficient.

Mr. Edge, without a doubt, is a man about business. He has been in the business of serving the Plains community for several decades with a proven record that speaks for itself. Although his seat is being opposed, he is seeking a renewed term on the city council with plans to continue serving the citizens of Plains. Councilman Edge currently serves as Chairman of Subdivisions & Streets. He also is a co-chair for the Finance Committee and Water & Sewage.

Councilman Edge has lived in Plains his entire life. In fact, he plans to die as a resident of the city. He and his wife, Mrs. Naomi Edge, celebrate forty-six years of marriage. They have three children and six grandchildren.
