MLK Unity Day
We are excited to announce that on Saturday, January 13th, the MLK Dreamers are sponsoring an MLK Unity Celebration to commemorate the life, dream, and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2018 marks the 50th year for celebrating this national and international leader. The MLK Dreamers are under the leadership of Ms. Nadine Pope.
Nadine envisioned rekindling the MLK parade along with a Unity Rally which will kick off at 12:30 p.m. in Lenny’s Market Downtown Americus. The Unity Rally will encompass live inspirational music, a variety of food vendors, educational vendors, and a featured Game Time Trucking with an array of video games for youth of all ages. Game Time is an African-American owned business based out of Macon, Georgia. Author, Ms. Melinda Merritt will be present to share info on his recent book entitled “Melinda’s Magic.” Fun Facts will be shared about Dr. King and the civil rights journey in Southwest Georgia.
Attendees at the Unity Rally can expect to hear several mini-motivational messages from the following: Ms. Raven Payne, Mr. Jimmy Whaley, Judge George Peagler, Miss Destinee Swain (Lee County Homecoming Queen), Rev Wendy Peacock and Mr. Kirk Barner. We will transition from the Unity Rally to walk across the street to the Sumter County Courthouse for the Memorial Tribute held at 3:15 pm led by the Americus Sumter Ministerial Association in collaboration with the elected officials, and MLK Dreamers. Mr. Marcus Arnett will be the guest speaker. ASHS Band, under the direction of Ms. Debra Hughes, will adorn us with the National Anthem and the City of Americus Police Department will post the colors.
Promptly at 4:00 pm, our main event for the evening (Unity Parade) will begin from the courthouse grounds. Grand Marshall’s Tyler Clark, Sharon Johnson& Janice Smarr. Local civic organizations, churches, and Terrell County High School Marching Band will be among the participants. The parade will end back at Sumter County Courthouse.
We welcome any interested vendors and parade participants. Entry Fees can be paid prior to 12 noon in Lenny’s Market.
The Annual MLK Commemorative Program will be held at Friendship Baptist Church at 10:00 am. on Monday, January 15th. Kent Hill will be keynote speaker.
Last but not least, the culminating event will be held on Wednesday, January 17th at 11:00 am, The MLK Convocation Program at GSW Storm Dome. Mrs. Shariah McKenzie Solomon, an Americus native, will be the guest speaker.
The entire community is encouraged to join together in unity to build our community centered in love, peace, justice, and civil liberties for all. Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday.
