In keeping with her mission to provide
children with books to read, retired educator, Teresa Mansfield, distributed
over six hundred free books to students attending summer school in primary
and elementary grades in the Sumter County School District last week.
Mansfield also gave-away four hundred books at her residence and in areas
where children may not be afforded opportunities to own their own books. The
educator has presented over five thousand books to children since she began
her own program, "Read to Me," in 2006, to encourage children to read. "It
was quite exhilarating to watch the joy on the faces of children as they
scurried around from table to table to make their personal selections of
books to read," said the local reading advocate. "Building strong reading
skills and an interest in reading is one of the most important things
parents/guardians can do for their child's academic development. PARENTS
SHOULD READ TO THEIR CHILDREN AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO READ," continued
Mansfield. She will be giving away more children's books to the Boys and
Girls Club, the Housing Authority of Americus Summer Reading Program and at
other locations. "I'm most appreciative of those who have donated books to
my program and hope that there are others who will do the same. I purchase
mostly pre-owned/pre-loved books and some new books when I can afford to do
so. I do not receive any federal or state funding for my program," said
Mansfield. FOR MORE INFORMATION AND POSSIBLE ASSISTANCE IN THE "READ TO ME"
