Marshall: Cash incentives motivate challenged students

Pictured(L-R) Staley’s Fast Track team, Marilyn Williams, lead teacher, Daphne Hamilton, Fannie Mann, Sue Statham, Antonio Willis and principal Victoria Harris with Fast Track students who received cash for passing parts of the CRCT and the “Reading a Million Words” requirement.

Sometimes, you have to reach students by whatever costs. At Staley Middle School, the cost was $3,600. Dr. John D. Marshall, a prominent local physician, promised the 23 students of the Fast Track learning program at Staley that he would pay each student up to $250 to pass all 5 sections of the Criterion- Referenced Competency Test (CRCT), which includes math, reading, language arts, science and social studies mandated by the state and local school board and $250 for successfully completing the "Reading a Million Words" requirement. This would give each student the opportunity to earn $500.
