Deacon Bennie Thomas, Sr.

Deacon Bennie Thomas, Sr. was born in Webster County, Georgia on April 21, 1924 to the parentage of the late Mr. Zeke Thomas and the late Mrs. Fleta May Thomas.  At an early age, he joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Webster county, where he served until his health failed. He served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons for many years. He received his education in the public schools of Webster County. In his early years, he worked as a Farmer during the week and a Barber on Saturday’s alongside the late Deacon Henry Jackson in Plains, Georgia. He later worked at Phillips Industries and then he ventured out on his own becoming a Self-Employed Carpenter. He repaired and remodeled several homes in the surrounding areas. He was one of the original members of the Soul Stirrer Spiritual Singers where he sang Tenor. He had a quiet spirit and was a good husband and provider to his wife of 75 years, the late Naomi Wakefield Thomas, as well as his children.

In addition to his parents and wife, Deacon Thomas is preceded in death by his brothers, Mr. Walter Thomas, Mr. Woodrow Thomas and Rev. Daniel Thomas; a sister, Mrs. Linnie Lee Johnson; two grandchildren, Pamela Solomon and Korrey Harris; a great-great grandson, LaDarius Nash; two sons-in-law, U. D. Solomon and Paul Williamson; a grandson-in-law, Edward Ivory and a niece, whom he help raise, Mrs. Dora Mae Greene.

Deacon Thomas leaves to cherish his memories, his children: Mrs. Arrena Solomon, Plains, GA; Mr. Ezekiel (Carolyn) Thomas, Jacksonville, FL; Mr. Bennie (Clara) Thomas, Jr., Landover, MD; Mr. Nathaniel (Vyrtis) Thomas, Mitchellville, MD; Rev. Roy (Evangelist Jackie) Thomas, Dumfries, VA; and Ms. Annie Ruth Williamson, Americus, GA; one brother-in-law, Mr. Herman (Bobbie) Wakefield, Oakland, CA; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Minion, Plains, GA, Ms. Dorothy Wakefield and Ms. Roxie Wakefield both of Jacksonville, FL; 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 19 great-great grandchildren; dedicated caregivers: Tosha Hughes, Trenia Sims, Patricia Daniels, Deleisa Daniels, Staff of Magnolia Manor Nursing Center and Innovative Senior Solutions; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, including two devoted cousins, Ms. Eva Thomas and Mr. Edward Thomas other relatives and friends, including devoted neighbors: Mr. Calvin Wright, Deacon Ralph and Jurilene Morgan, Ms. Bessie Brown, Minister James and Beverly Thomas, and his Allen and Sheffield Street neighbors also survive.



Brandon and Quina Morgan celebrated their 2nd wedding anniversary on March 7.
