| AMERICUS - Some area residents might have
recognized the 6-foot-7 Otis Leverette dazzling a crowd at the Dwight Harris
Boys Club earlier this month. The former Americus High School and NFL defensive end stopped by the Harris summer youth program in Americus to give them some words of inspiration. Leverette spoke to more than a hundred children and parents, as his former high school coach Dwight Harris stood by. "I wanted to teach them the difference between activity and productivity," Leverette said. Leverette was a five-sport athlete in high school, lettering in football, track, wrestling, basketball, and baseball - the latter where he developed a 90 mph [pitching] baseball. Leverette has a training firm, ModernDay Fitness that he opened last year in Shelby County, Alabama after the end of his NFL career. He also trains high school athletes by working on speed and agility - getting them ready for the recruiting process. But he praised the Harris Boys Club for its work with children, teaching them more than just sports. "Coach Harris has them reading books, quoting bible scriptures, and learning all types of educational things," Leverette said. He put additional praise on the program for teaching them just as much about common sense as they do with algebra. Leverette has about four major speaking engagements a year. "I'm all about results," he said. Leverette finished his collegiate career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 2001, but was traded to the Washington Redskins prior to the start of the season. He was sent on to the San Diego Chargers. He was a starter with the San Francisco 49ers in 2004.
