PLAINS - It is a long ways from Plains to New York City, a trek made possible for Tina Taft through her dreams of becoming a lawyer.
Taft, a 1997 Americus High graduate and valedictorian, is a valued attorney at Huron Consulting Group, a management-consulting firm based in New York. Her duties include helping in the preparation for litigation.

She said one misconception about having a law degree is that it's only used to fight cases in court.
According to its Web site, Huron Consulting Group helps clients in diverse industries improve performance, comply with complex regulations, resolve disputes, recover from distress, leverage technology, and stimulate growth.
"People think you go from law school to the courts, she said.

She said her job also assists her in everyday life.
"The job helps you come up with analytical skills, it helps you to think better on your feet," she said.
It's not clear when Taft decided she wanted to be a lawyer, but she grew up in a Plains household, headed by a single but a hard-working mother who always made sure her four children had what they needed for school.

"If there was a need for school, she always got it," said Taft. "Education was always a priority."
It was Taft's participation in an Upward Bound program that provided her with interest in going to Yale University. That's when money for education was really tested, but she applied anyway.
"I was like 'what's the worse that could happen,'" she said.

She was able to find financial assistance and scholarship money, including $1,000 from the Americus-Sumter NAACP.
She did have to adapt to the New Haven, Conn. private university.
"If I said I'm 'fixin' to go to the store,' people there didn’t know what I was talking about," Taft said with a laugh. "But, I like the challenge of coming to a new place and adapting."
She did add that the mix of different cultures was a great find there.

After cruising through Yale, she obtained her law degree at the University of Memphis Law School in 2006. She finds New York interesting and has enjoyed trying to adapt. She talks about a number of interesting exhibits and sites, including one-legged dancers.
" I'm just enjoying life," she said.
Taft hopes one day to open up her private firm.
