| This year the nation's first black president was ushered
into office on the platform of change, and this years Sumter County NAACP
33rd Annual Freedom Fund Banquet will mirror that promise.
With the theme of "Change Has Come," the annual event will take place
Saturday, April 25 at 6 pm in the Hangar Gymnasium at South GA Technical
College.
Matt Wright, president of the Americus Sumter County Branch of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) said the
organization wants to show the community why their local support is
imperative in helping to provide the change Barack Obama is trying to
implement nationwide.
"We want to get across that Obama can't do it all himself," said Wright. "We
must work diligently on a local level to make it work."
He added that the NAACP plans to showcase some strategies for being able to
meet Obama in the middle.
"We have to change our way of thinking," Wright said.
Helping to bring a keener focus of president Obama's change will be keynote
speaker Glen Ford, editor of the Black Agenda Report and radio announcer.
Ford is a huge proponent of the NAACP and attributes a number of
accomplishments of blacks as a whole to the organization. Furthermore, he
credits the election of Obama to a number of black pioneers before him that
made it more acceptable for mainstream voters to elect a black president. He
said it's important to credit blacks as well as pay homage to Obama.
"Let us celebrate ourselves," he said.
The banquet will feature speakers and honor deserving citizens with
community service awards. We are highlighting the several attorneys who have
assisted us in many discrimination cases.
There will be entertainment that will include some of the best local talent
-Joey Harris, Rosemary Jones, Kayana Jones and Courtney Latimore.
"It's going to be an enjoyable and classy extravaganza," Wright said.
Again the NAACP is asking local churches and civic groups to select a male
or female youth to receive a $100 savings account opened in their name at
Wachovia Bank. This year's banquet is a continuation of its 32nd Annual
Freedom Fund Banquet- Theme: "Investing in Our Youth."
"Your support will continue to help us bring our community closer together
as we continue to set new standards for pro-active improvements rather than
reactive adjustments."
A total of 30 savings accounts will once again be given to deserving young
men and women in our community.
If your family, church, or civic organization is interested in purchasing a
table of 10 is only $500. You may want to buy advertisement in our souvenir
