Everett arrives at Houston hospital to continue recovery

HOUSTON -- Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett returned to his native Texas on Friday to be closer to his family for the next phase of his recovery from a life-threatening spinal cord injury.

"Kevin's trip went pretty good. He stayed awake the entire time. He's fine," Eric Armstead, a partner of Everett's agent, Brian Overstreet, told The Associated Press. "He's doing well and he's resting. That's the news: He's resting."

Accompanied by his mother and girlfriend, Everett was transferred by private plane from Buffalo to Houston's Memorial Hermann hospital, which provides medical rehabilitation for patients of catastrophic trauma such as brain or spinal cord injuries.

Armstead said Everett continues to breathe on his own and is not connected to any devices save for one intravenous drip. He also said Everett was pleased to meet with close family, including his three younger sisters, and friends who were unable to visit him in Buffalo.

"He was in great spirits," Armstead said.

Everett's transfer to the hospital's 116-bed facility came less than two weeks after he was hurt making a tackle in the Bills' season opener against Denver on Sept. 9.

Doctors initially feared Everett would never walk again after he arrived at Buffalo's Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital paralyzed from the neck down. Everett began moving his arms and legs a few days later, leading doctors to significantly upgrade their prognosis. They're now confident the player could be walking within weeks.

Leftwich signs two-year deal with Falcons

Quarterback Byron Leftwich signed a two-year, $6 million contract with the Falcons on Tuesday, but one thing that won't be included in the deal is his longtime jersey number - 7.

The former Jacksonville Jaguars starter passed his physical and went through a workout before coming to terms with a team in search of any help it can get on offense. Leftwich was in need of work after being released by the Jaguars, a team for which started 44 games from 2003-06. Full Story........

The Hour of Betrayal

of Dr. John Marshall

By Brother Marcus Muhammad

The Bible teaches us the profound lesson, "Behold, how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity." One thing our enemies have never wanted to see is for us to be a real brotherhood and a real sisterhood. It is said that, "there is a thin line between love and hate." Love and hate carry the same emotional fervor. One is positive and the other is negative. One is creative and the other is destructive. But when one loves as deeply as we have loved each other, and then, the bond is broken and hate replaces love, we are forced to ask the question what changed our direction? What forces interfered with this bond? When a man loves a woman and a woman loves a man and the love turns to hate, it is more than likely that this turn comes because of a sense of betrayal. Court rules 'Jena 6' defendant to stay behind bars

art.mychal.bell.jpgJENA, Louisiana (CNN) -- Mychal Bell, the sole defendant who remains behind bars from the group of teens known as the "Jena 6," will not be released Friday, a court decided. Bell, 17, has been in jail since his arrest more than nine months ago.

It was not immediately clear what happened in court Friday, where Bell's attorneys had planned to push for his release.

"It is our understanding that the judge refused to give bond or bail to Mychal Bell today," the Rev. Al Sharpton, a civil rights activist who traveled to Jena for Thursday's rally, said in a written statement.

A source inside the court said the issue of bond was not discussed at the hearing. Attorneys did not immediately comment. The proceedings, involving a juvenile, are not open to media.

Bell's mother left the courthouse in tears.

"We'll be back," shouted one Jena 6 supporter outside the courthouse Friday.
