ACTIVITY SWARMS AT PERFORMANCE LEARNING CENTER
Personal attention to the specific needs of students at the Communities in School Sumter County Performance Learning Center is a trademark for their national record of per capita graduates. Still, the 600 Wing on Americus-Sumter High North Campus, the Freshman Academy, continues daily to increase community involvement. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has created dramatic school environments throughout the nation that target students who need more personalized instruction and listening adults. Along with intense academic information, students at the PLC learn the power of the modern computer as they receive much of their prompting and data from the NovaNet learning program. From the creation of the Sumter PLC some three years ago, students continue their comment, ?We do not have peer pressure and only have association with those who are seeking the same goal, high school graduation.? With planned morning greeting and ?brain-gym? breaks for students, the learning environment is structured for the modern high school student. In addition to information-sharing environments, Academic Administrator, Connie Wise, still finds time to mesh her students into the community. ?These students are receiving more than academic instruction at our PLC. Our community has become a garden of activities for these young people. Each time we are asked for student support in any worthwhile project of needs endeavor, our students are there. The March 1 tornado brought out the best of winners in Sumter County. Our students were in the middle of these volunteers! The SAM Food Pantry has reached new delivery levels and our young men are actively involved in unloading and delivery of these family products. I hope that other PLC schools have received the welcome and gracious involvement that we continue to enjoy. The Communities in Schools of Georgia certainly knows of our student involvement and success. They are visiting regularly to seek advice for other PLC?s in Georgia,? said Mrs. Wise. This past week, the American Red Cross Blood Mobile was parked adjacent to the PLC to receive a record 39 pints of blood for this PLC sponsored event. Students were donating blood; students were welcoming other community donors and were hosts to many of their Mentors who took time to visit and donate. The Sumter Performance Learning Center constantly receives state accolades for their winning programs and student successes. This success seems to draw others in Sumter County as citizens realize the increasing actions of this unique school environment to help students who have fallen behind with their high school credits because of past school conflicts and non-positive student involvement.
