Stephen Jackson Filed Malpractice Complaint Against Sumter Regional Hospital

Below is Jackson's letter filed with the State's Licensing Board in November, 2005. The letter is addressed to Mrs. Lasharn Hughes, Administrator of the Licensing Board:

Dear Ms Hughes:

I am a victim of malpractice at Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus, Ga. On November 30, 2003, I was rushed to Sumter Regional Hospital (SRH) due to unbearable abdominal pain. It was decided in the emergency room that I was suffering from appendicitis and Dr. Glenn Summers was called to perform the surgery. I learned later that Dr. Summers had problems with malpractice while he was in Florida but he was in Americus only a few months when he dealt with me.

I stayed in the hospital approximately one week and then I was released by Dr Summers but I was back into the hospital four days later complaining of abdominal pain in the same area. The diagnosis was post operative infection.

I had at least three visits to the emergency room in the interim. Then on October 19, 2005, my wife rushed me to the emergency room again for the same problem and upon evaluation it was discovered there was a piece of my appendix that was left by Dr. Summers. Dr. Henry Teaford had to take me back into the operating room.

I have since learned that another patient, Milton Mills, was operated on by Dr Summers and is currently in a nursing home in a vegetative state because Summers attempted to correct a problem that should have been referred to a tertiary center [like Emory]. Dr Summers tried to remove a duplicate small intestine that Milton Mills was born with; this was way out of Dr Summers' expertise as I have been told.

Sumter Regional Hospital has a long history of protecting bad doctors and I know you would never know of Dr Summers if I didn't report him to your board.

I want to formally complain about Dr Summers to prevent other unsuspecting individuals from falling prey to his poor quality of care and malpractice. I can be reached anytime at the following telephone number: 229 591-5192

Thank you,

Stephen Jackson
