As reported in last month's issue of the Americus Sumter Observer, State Representative Michael Cheokas and owner of Big "A" Package Store in Americus, Georgia hired Attorney Jimmy Skipper to represent him in an unemployment hearing. Cheokas and his counsel appealed the decision of the administrative hearing officer (AHO) that had ruled that Tameka Woods was not at fault when she was fired and should be paid unemployment benefits.
On July 28, 2010 the Board of Review for the Georgia Department of Labor adopted the findings of the AHO and affirmed the decision whereby Woods will continue to receive her benefits which were due to her. When President Wright of the NAACP was asked what he thought about the decision he said that, "Vice President Eugene Edge had done a great job at the hearing and that they were expecting a favorable decision because we were right and God was on our side." Wright further stated that "we are now preparing to file complaints of race and sex discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and expecting to win there as well."
